MAIROWA SCHOOL CLASSROOMS
MAIROWA SCHOOL CLASSROOMS
INVESTING IN EDUCATION IN MAIROWA
“An estimated 2 million Tanzanian children between ages 7 and 13 are out of school, and almost 70% of children aged 14-17 are not enrolled in secondary education”. A challenge faced at the smaller villages in Tanzania is the lack of infrastructure to support the growing number of enrolled learners. Class size and comfortability is a key factor affecting learning outcomes, especially where classes are very large or cover several grades. The early grades are the most critical and yet tend to be the most crowded.
Explore With Purpose has partnered with TAASA Lodge and the Löffler family to address the need of creating additional classrooms at the Mairowa Primary School. This project has significantly alleviated overcrowding, reducing the number of students per classroom from 150 to 75—a major milestone for the school. During the classroom handover ceremony, the school identified essential supplies they needed, including pots, pans, printers, and stationery, all of which we were able to provide.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
- Pillar category: Education
- Project location: Mairowa, Northern Tanzania
- Project goal: Build a classroom
- Project completion date: September 2024
- Project partner: TAASA Lodge, Julie & Moritz Löffler

PROJECT DETAILS
Project Background
Mairowa Primary School is a day school hosting nearly 800 children within 11 classrooms. A challenge faced at the Mairowa School is the lack of infrastructure to support the growing number of enrolled learners. This has led to an overcrowding of existing classrooms with an estimated 150 kids in one classroom, and in some cases, children not receiving education or attending school.
Class size and comfortability is a key factor affecting learning outcomes, especially where classes are very large or cover several grades. The early grades are the most critical and yet tend to be the most crowded.
In an effort to tackle this problem, we have built an additional classrooms at the school and fitted them out with desks, supplies, and additional materials like cooking pots & printers to help them thrive.
Scope of Works
This renovation, overseen by a dedicated Project Manager on the ground in Tanzania, focused on building 1 new classrooms at the Mairowa Primary School. Works included:
- Substructure & Super Structure build
- Roofing
- Windows, ceilings & doors
- Fit-out, painting, finishes, & more
Donors & Fundraising
This project was fundraised through Moritz & Julie Löffler, along with their social media following.
Moritz & Julie Löffler, along with their children, visited TAASA Lodge in 2022 and fell in love with the lodge and the communities that surrounded it. They knew immediately they wanted to leave a lasting impact and opened up the ability to give back to their followers on social media.
Within a few short months, the Löffler’s had raised nearly $80,000 for projects to benefit the rural communities and to better their lives through Education. Since then, the Löffler’s have repaired an Old Dormitory in Ololosokwan and built a new classroom in Mairowa. The remainder of their funds will go to an additional classroom set to be built in Early 2025.
