Empowering Girls in Tanzania

About Msichana Imara Foundation (MIF)

Msichana Imara Foundation (MIF) is a nonprofit organization led by young women, for young women, in Arusha, Tanzania. Since its founding, the organization has served more than 3,000 adolescent girls, empowering them with essential skills to overcome social and economic challenges. To this end, the organization implements programs to combat a range of issues which present barriers to girls’ education such as child marriage, period poverty, gender-based violence, and more. These programs focus on sustainable menstrual health solutions, entrepreneurship training, and sexual and reproductive health education.

Breaking Barriers to Education

Tanzania faces a persistent challenge: a lack of access to menstrual health management resources and education. This, also known as period poverty, forces many girls to use unsafe materials during their periods because they can’t afford proper supplies. Access to clean facilities and water is also inadequate, which not only poses health risks for girls but also reinforces taboos associated with menstruation. As a result, many girls miss school during their periods due to shame and fear of ridicule. MIF is committed to changing these realities through its programs focused on period poverty.

Empowering Generations

Explore with Purpose is joining hands with the Msichana Imara Foundation (MIF) to tackle period poverty and cultural barriers surrounding menstruation through the Msichana Project.

MIF will be empowering adolescent girls by:

  • Delivering menstrual health management classes.
  • Equipping them with the skills to make and use reusable sanitary pads.
  • Providing materials and training for pad construction. Each girl will receive four reusable pads to take home.

Additionally, MIF will conduct workshops within the community to address and dismantle the stigmas associated with menstruation.

This initiative aims to create a lasting positive change by providing girls with practical tools and fostering a more understanding environment within the community.

Impact and Support

MIF’s Msichana Project targets 200 girls and 100 community members to achieve long-lasting, positive. The organization equips girls with practical tools for managing their menstrual cycles and addresses community attitudes that make menstruation a negative experience. By tackling both these aspects, MIF hopes to promote girls’ dignity and wellbeing while empowering them to pursue their dreams without feeling burdened by their menstrual cycles.

How to get involved

A donation of $25 equips one girl with knowledge, reusable pads that can last for up to 2 consecutive years, and the ability to manage her menstrual cycle with dignity.
