MAIROWA WATER PROJECT

PROVIDING ACCESS TO WATER IN MAIROWA, TANZANIA
“According to the United Nations, over 40% of the Tanzanian population lacks access to clean water. Moreover, the World Health Organization estimates that diarrhea due to contaminated water is the fourth leading cause of death in Tanzania.“
Mairowa is a vibrant Maasai village located in the foothills of Northern Tanzania, bordering Kenya and the Serengeti National Park. Due to its remote location, Mairowa and neighboring village Ololosokwan are typically overlooked and under-resourced. In this remote region a lack of safe drinking water and healthcare severely compromises people’s health, particularly for young children, pregnant women and the elderly who are vulnerable to diseases.
Explore With Purpose has partnered with Wine To Water who started a holistic program to expand water access, distribute filters, and provide basic hygiene training for the community.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
- Pillar category: Health
- Project location: Mairowa, Northern Tanzania
- Project goal: Provide access to clean water and provide basic hygiene training to the Mairowa village
- Project timeframe: 8-10 Months
- Project partner: Wine To Water
- Fundraising Partner: The DeBoer Family
- Funding goal: $ 174,800.00

PROJECT DETAILS
Project Background
Access to clean and safe water has a significant impact on communities. It frees up time for women and children who would otherwise spend hours collecting water. With time freed up, women take more prominent roles in their communities, children focus on their education, and families engage in agriculture and other income-generating activities. Additionally, access to clean water reduces the incidence of waterborne illnesses, improving the overall health of communities.
The village of Mairowa does not have clean water access and people walk 5 – 6km to the spring in the neighboring village of Ololosokwan. This route is dangerous, and in 2020 people died while walking to get water.
Our goal is to provide the infustructure needed to provide the village of Mairowa with access ti clean water, within Mairowa.
Scope of Works
Our priority is to build a new spring catchment system with a solar powered pump that can get water from Ololosokwan to Mairowa.
To achieve this goal, the proposed Mairowa Community Water System consists of a 6.5km pipeline with a solar powered pump and reservoir tank for water access points and livestock troughs.
Improved water access in Mairowa involves:
- Local Water User Committees
- Spring Catchment, Reservoir Tower and Tanks with Solar Powered Pump
- Community Tap Stands and Livestock Water Troughs
- WASH Education & Tech Training
- Water4Schools Program
- Clean Water Filters
Donors & Fundraising
Gallery
Milestones & Achievements
- Expanded water taps in nearby village Ololosokwan
- A W|W team was on location to meet with the community and lodges to prioritize and improve clean water access.
- Improved spring catchment in Ololosokwan
- Walked 6.5km path of proposed Mairowa pipeline and determined water access points
- GPS + engineering + water spring analysis for Mairowa project design
